CANCER, DIET & LIFESTYLE CHOICES

Your dietary habits can promote cancer, or help protect against it…
here’s what Harvard Medical School have to say.

Much research has pointed toward certain foods and nutrients that may help prevent — or contribute to —certain types of cancer. In fact, estimates suggest that less than 30% of a person's lifetime risk of getting cancer results from uncontrollable factors. The rest you have the power to change, including your diet.

What should you be eating?

Cut down on processed and red meat. Eat foods high in antioxidants, especially dark green leafy veg, and brighly-coloured fruits and vegetables — for instance, spinach, carrots, and tomatoes. Avoid High-GI items like sugar-sweetened soft drinks, fruit juices, and processed foods like pizza. Instead, eat low-GI foods like whole fruits, sweet potatoes, beans, peas and lentils, wholegrain bread and pasta.

What other factors can you work on?

Cancer prevention is often a matter of lifestyle. Four areas stand out as being key to minimising you cancer risk: smoking, drinking, weight, and exercise. Nobody said it would be easy! - but if you can work on these areas, science says you will definitely be doing your health a favour.
